Tu 4/30/2019 - 6/11/2019  This course of lectures focuses on the role played by Art, Music and Philosophy in Western culture from the Renaissance to the 20th century. It traces the origins of the mainstream styles of the three disciplines as they crystallized in the various centers of European and American culture. Aristotle placed poetic truth above a simple chronology of historical thought and events, because, to truly understand the spirit of a people, one must examine humanity in its largest sense. Such investigation does more than deepen our understanding of past human behavior; it also increases our awareness of the present, and that is the objective of these lectures.

W 5/22/2019 - 6/12/2019  This class covers the story of five men who rose from obscurity, even poverty, to become business giants. It is about visionaries; indeed, the greatest asset these men had in common was their ability to imagine the future and see how they could triumph within it. We'll learn about Cornelius Vanderbilt (railroads), Henry Ford (automobiles), J.P. Morgan (finance), John D. Rockefeller (oil), and Andrew Carnegie (steel). These men were instrumental in making America the industrial and financial powerhouse of the world. And yes, they broke and rewrote some of the rules along the way.
