Linocuts, also called Linoleum Cuts, are a type of print made from a sheet of linoleum into which a design has been cut in relief. This process of printmaking is similar to woodcut but, since linoleum lacks a grain, linocuts can yield a greater variety of effects.
Students will create and then carve their snowflake design into a block of linoleum. Ink is rolled onto the uncut surface of the block, then paper laid on top of the inked block and pressure is applied to produce a print. Any areas of the linoleum that have been cut away by tools will remain white when pressed onto a piece of paper. The Linocut can be used over and over again, using different colored inks.
