In this one day course, each student will construct a five-string zither with moveable bridges.
In addition to instrument-making skills, the class provides students with a hands-on introduction to the basic concepts behind just intonation, microtonal music, and different Non-Western scales. Through guided experimentation, each student will construct their own instrument and design their own unique, musical scale.
No previous musical or wood-working background is necessary and students of all skill-levels are welcome.
Open to adults and teens, 14 years and older.
Class takes place in the woodshop at Arbutus Folk School, 610 4th Ave E, Olympia. Parking downtown is free on weekends.
All materials, including pre-cut three foot long alder board and hardware, tools, and equipment will be provided. Please bring lunch (there are also various eateries nearby to purchase food), and a notebook and pen if you would like to take notes.
Students should dress comfortably.
