Start the new year with color! In this four-week evening class taking place in the instructor’s home studio, you will learn about the color and natural dye traditions of Finland and the Indigenous Sámi of Europe’s far north, both parts of the instructor’s heritage.
A series of hands-on natural dyeing activities will deepen connections as you prepare, dye, and modify several fiber types using 4-5 different natural dye sources that will yield 16-20 colors, with all materials provided. Students will create their own dye sample books to document their color explorations in the class. Participants will complete the project inspired and prepared to continue their dye practice in their own kitchen at home.
The instructor will also support interested students in exploring the dyeing traditions of their own ancestry or home-place and how to source local, seasonal plants representing these traditions. If you wish, Marja will support and guide you in planning and possibly starting to execute this optional, additional dye project based on your own heritage. However, please note that the class registration fee includes all sample fibers and dye materials for the class project, but students interested in starting a subsequent personal project will obtain their own supplies separately.
Open to students ages 8 and older.
Appropriate for beginner skill levels.
Address will be sent to enrolled students as the start date approaches.
All materials, tools, and equipment will be provided. Please bring an apron or wear clothes that can get dirty.
