Come and learn how to “ecoprint” - or to transfer color directly from leaves or plants onto fabric - and create your own unique and colorful autumnal themed bandana!
After a brief introduction to natural dyes, your instructor will lead you around the neighborhood to harvest plants and leaves. A dye will be made from the locally sourced materials collected. Students will then learn special ecoprinting techniques that will help create defined prints of the locally-foraged plants on fabric.
Note that the instructor will mordant (or pre-treat) the fabric prior to class but will go over all the steps with students. Those interested in learning about the in-depth scour and mordanting (the fiber pre-treatment) process may like to register for the instructor's Introduction to Dyes course when it is next offered.
Students will leave with a simple materials guide, a mordanting guide, and their own unique ecoprinted autumnal bandana! Suitable for students with no prior knowledge as well as those with some basic experience in dyeing. All materials will be provided. Please bring an apron or wear clothes that can get dirty or stained with dye. Paper and pen for taking notes are also recommended.
