In this woodworking course led by guest artist and boat-builder Ben Kahn, students will learn how to shape a 2'×6' piece of wood into a canoe paddle.
Students will use an assortment of tools to shape the wood, including a bandsaw, block plane, spokeshave, spar gauge, draw knife, chisels, and rasps. Students will learn how to achieve an accurate layout and preserve their layout line for a high-quality and symmetrical paddle. This project can be tedious during some steps and requires the student to take their time. With patience the student will create a beautiful and useful paddle for boating. While it will certainly help to bring some woodworking experience, anyone will be able to follow the steps and create their own functional paddle.
Please wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. There will be a half hour break for lunch - please bring food and a water bottle.
This course is generously sponsored in part by the Port of Olympia. Thank you!
