Community Clay Night is a time to relax at the end of a busy week and enjoy some creative time in the studio with a guided project/theme.
April Clay Night - Sgraffito!
Let’s practice a centuries old decorating technique together - sgraffito! The word in Italian means "to scratch". We will apply layers of color or colors of your choice (using slips, stains, and underglazes) to a leather hard vessel, then scratch or lightly carve off parts of the surface layers with a tool to reveal contrasting images, patterns, and textures as the clay color underneath is revealed. You will be amazed as your unique designs come to life with sgraffito!
Participants will be provided with two leather hard clay vessels at the beginning of class. After class, pieces will be fired with a transparent glaze. You are also welcome to bring your own leather hard pieces to work on. This class is open to all skill levels! No ceramics experience is needed.
