There are so many ways to create functional forms and fanciful objects with clay. Handbuilding presents an array of techniques that are approachable for beginners and satisfyingly complex for those well versed in ceramics.
In this 8-week class we will learn multiple techniques for shaping clay by hand. Utilizing templates and molds we will learn to create functional cups, platters, plates and bowls with soft slabs and boxes with hard slabs. Pinching and coiling will be used to create bases and extensions to our forms as well as handle and feet attachments. Through these processes we will learn the stages of dryness and what techniques are best applied during each stage. To finish the surfaces of our work we will learn styles of texturing, relief carving, painting with underglazes, sgraffito, and glazing.
Each class will include a technical demonstration followed by time to learn the process through making. Once the construction and surfacing techniques have been covered, students will choose a project to complete during the course. Using the techniques they are most drawn to, each student will be encouraged to create a small set of related pieces that have continuity in form, surface, function, or all of the above!
There is flexibility in this class for students to make what they want and follow the inspiration that comes from the material. I encourage everyone to come with an open mind that will be receptive to learning through mistakes and finding success through experimentation.
Note: please bring apron, sketch book, pencil, and photos if desired! Students should wear clothes they don't mind getting messy.
