As a budding woodworker or homeowner, build confidence in this in-depth course on using power tools for woodworking. We will take a rough piece of wood and turn it in to a tray/valet box using power tools, learning both safety and technique through hands-on experience with the following:
Stationary Tools: jointer, thickness planer, table saw, bandsaw, miter/chop saw, drill press, router table
Handheld Tools: circular saw, jigsaw, drill, handheld router, random orbital sander
Students will:
- Use power tools to take a rough piece of wood and turn it in to a tray/valet box to take home
- Learn about planning the steps of a project, especially as they relate to the order of using power tools
- Learn the purpose and use of each tool as we go, including capabilities and limitations
- Learn the safe setup and use of each tool from start to finish
- Learn classic and innovative techniques for achieving specific goals and preventing errors
- Learn creative solutions for challenges, such as when a tool doesn’t seem to be able to achieve something you need to do
- Learn about jigs and templates and their role in making a project easier or more accurate on power tools
- Bonus: Learn to glue, clamp, and sand a project
- Bonus: Learn about wood finish options (oils, stains, etc.)
- Optional: Apply a low-VOC (fume) finish in class, or apply other self-provided finishes at home.
This class is designed for any skill level, including absolute beginners! Build confidence and skills in a safe, friendly environment. All tools and materials will be provided. We will provide safety glasses, ear muffs, and dust masks, but feel free to bring your own preferred protective equipment, if desired. Students should bring lunch/snacks/water or plan to buy from nearby food trucks/establishments on our 30-minute lunch breaks.
Students should wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that can get dusty. Avoid long/loose jewelry/sleeves that could get caught in tools. For those with long hair/beards, bring a hair tie/clip.
