For those of you who have never done embroidery before (and have always wanted to try it), or would like a refresher, this is the course for you!
The class will discuss threads, needles, fabrics, and designs, and will make a sampler of basic stitches for surface embroidery. Once you are comfortable with this group of stitches, you are ready to create simple or complicated pieces - and anything in between! The stitches you will practice and put onto your sampler include a running stitch, double running stitch, stem (or outline) stitch, backstitch, blanket stitch, French knot, chain stitch, and detached chain stitch. With time (and class interest) you could go into further versions of any of the aforementioned stitches. The instructor is happy to follow your lead!
Students should bring $5 to the first day of class for a kit of embroidery materials which include fabric, a variety of threads, needles, and written instructions. This will be paid to the instructor on the first day of class. Students will also need to bring the following to class: a 5” screw-type embroidery hoop (or the instructor will have good quality hoops available for purchase for $9) and a small pair of scissors.
This 3-session course is for ages 16 and up; ages 13-15 are welcome to register if accompanied by a registered parent/guardian.
Clasess take place at Arbutus Folk School, 610 4th Ave E, Olympia.
Please note that this is not a cross-stitch class.
