Using a tool that you made with your own hands is one of the more rewarding experiences in crafting. During this class, students will practice basic hand tool techniques through making three wooden brushes. Because of their range in sizes, these brushes offer different applications that go beyond sweeping debris into a dustpan. We will be using tampico for the bristles, a natural fiber derived from the yucca plant. Students of all skill levels are welcome, and students who are looking for a more challenging project may incorporate detailed carving into their brush handles.
All materials and tools will be provided. For reference, the middle sized brush is approximately 4"x7", and the largest brush is about 14" long. Students may bring pen and paper to take notes, any preferred safety equipment (such as eye and hearing protection), and an orbital sander from home, if desired. Students should dress comfortably, wear closed-toed shoes, tie up long hair, and avoid wearing dangling jewelry.
