All skill levels
Adults and Youth 12+
Learn and experience Latin American folklore and Canto Nuevo music with musicians Patricia Mazuela and Abel Rocha of Sin Fronteras. All skills levels and musical talents are welcome!
This is a 2-part workshop happening on Oct 26th and Nov 2nd from 6:30-8pm. Meet in the Olympia Family Theater next door to Arbutus Folk School. We will be using spaces at both Arbutus Folk School and the Olympia Family Theater.
In this workshop, students will learn guitar, jarana, percussion, and vocals for 2-4 songs from the nueva canción movement of Latin America. All other instruments are welcome to participate in adaptation to the genre. Please bring along your instrument of choice.
Firstly a general introduction will be made to the genre, history, the political movement, and lyricism. This will be followed by the technical elements of instrumentation, song structure, fundamentals and a bit of theory. Finally, all of this will be incorporated into training for live performance.
Sin Fronteras will perform live at Arbutus Folk School on November 13th at 7pm. A few students will be selected from the workshop to perform with the band during the concert! Students selected to perform may need to bring their own sound equipment. Concert tickets are available for purchase at https://arbutusfolkschool.org/sin-fronteras-concert-november-13th-2021/.
Read more about Sin Fronteras at https://www.sinfronteraseattle.com/. This folk & traditional arts workshop is supported with funding from Northwest Heritage Resources, a Washington state cultural non-profit organization.
Due to the increased risk of Covid transmission in settings involving singing, we are asking that all participants be fully vaccinated before attending and wear masks at all times while present in the class.
