This is a beginning class offered by master carver Myrna Orsini, founding member of the Tenino Stone Carvers Guild. Myrna apprenticed with Canadian sculptor, George Pratt, and worked in Carrara, Italy at Carlo Nicoli's Stone Studio. She has been carving stone since 1984 and her work is in public and private collections in seven countries. She is the Founder and Director of Monarch Sculpture Park.
In this four-session course, students will learn the basics of 3-dimensional sculpture while carving two projects using New Zealand limestone. The first stone is 2x2" and the second is 5x5". New Zealand limestone is a soft stone easily worked with rasps and files. After completing the first two projects, students will have the option to carve in alabaster, which can be purchased from the instructor for a fee of $35.
Students should wear comfortable shoes for extended standing and bring a full apron to keep stone dust off their clothing. New Zealand limestone is dusty and masks are required. All tools, masks, and safety glasses will be available for participants.
