Spinning wheels hold a special place in our folklore and imagination, and there's something magical about transforming fluffy wool fiber into yarn. Join us for a two-day immersion introduction to the art and craft of spinning yarn.
Students will learn about the different kinds of wheels available and how to choose the right one for their body and needs, and sample some of the different spinning fibers available. We will begin with lap spinning and progress from there to treadling and, by the end of the first day, students will be spinning their own yarn.
On the second day, spinners will begin to refine their technique, learn how to make a center-pull ball on their hands, and learn to ply to create a balanced yarn. We will introduce some of the tools that fiber artists employ, such as a niddy-noddy and nostepinne. Students will leave the class with a handout filled with resources for connecting with the spinning community and their very first handspun yarn.
All beginners are welcome! No prior knowledge is required, however, this course is a great follow-up to the Drop Spindle for Beginners class. Students should bring an apron or wear clothes that can get a little dirty from wool. Bring water, snacks, and a cushion to sit on if needed.

Using Berroco Pima Soft, students will wind on enough warp to weave up to 5 spa cloths. Using one color for the warp and a different color for the weft, you can be creative with your designs as you weave, and can choose to weave for a rolled hem or short fringe. The instructor will have samples of each so you may decide before you start weaving.
This cute set of spa cloths would be great for gift exchanges at work or stocking stuffers (it's never to early to start planning!) or make them all for yourself to enjoy!
This two day course is appropriate for confident beginners who have a basic knowledge of weaving and warping a loom.
Looms will be provided. Students will need to bring scissors, a tape measure, a blunt tipped tapestry needle, and yarn. You will need two skeins for the warp and one skein for the weft, for a total of approximately 350 yards of Berroco Pima Soft yarn in two colors ($8.50 per skein). Berroco Pima Soft may be purchased at Indigo Purls Yarn Boutique or Our Local Yarn Shop. Make sure you mention the yarn is for a class at Arbutus to receive a 10% discount.

Join Rowan for a weekend immersive into blending wool! Learn how to make beautiful rolags, batts, and include special effects like gradients into your yarn spinning.
Blending tools offer infinite variety to the spinner. This course covers the basics of several popular blending tools: blending boards, drum carders, hand carders, and viking combs. You'll learn which tools you can use to suit your purpose, materials, and style.
Day One will be devoted to assembling and learning to use your own blending board - a portable, affordable and satisfying blending tool perfect for making one of a kind rolags or small batts. You will take home your own handmade blending board and accessories and learn how to use it for less than the price of purchasing one new.
Day Two will be an introduction to several other blending tools including handcarders, a drum carder, and viking combs. You'll get to try your hand at all of them and learn how we use these different tools for making woolen vs worsted preparations, add and blend colors for subtle or dramatic effects.
Experience and comfort with spinning on either spindle or wheel is a must as we will be spinning some of our preparations. Please bring your favorite device for spinning or you may use one of the school's Ashford Traditional wheels. Students will leave class with several batts, rolags, and other wool preparations, their own blending board, and a list of resources to help them continue their journey.
Students should wear comfortable clothes that can get a little wooly, and bring a beverage, snack, or money to purchase lunch during our lunch break.
Be sure to sign up early for this class! Registration will close on August 1st so blending boards can be ordered for all the students.

In this two day course, you will learn the parts of a rigid heddle loom and the importance each part plays in your weaving. You will be shown how to warp a loom and weave a towel. You will then learn hemstitching that holds woven yarn in place after the towel is removed from the loom. We will also discuss different weave structures and the impact of color in your woven items.
For this striped towel project, you will be using two or three different colors of cotton fiber. Each towel will be unique, depending on the colors that you choose and if you choose to weave with just one of the colors or using all colors, as in the sample. It is recommended that you purchase Berroco Pina 100 – one skein of each color. You may pick colors to match your kitchen or bathroom.
Appropriate for Beginner skill levels. Looms will be provided. Students will need to bring small scissors, a tape measure, a tapestry needle, and three different colored skeins of either Berroco or Cascade Pima 100 cotton yarn, at approximately 220 yards per skein (average cost $25). The Indigo Purls Yarn Boutique and Our Local Yarn Shop (OLYS) will give a 10% discount on these supplies if you mention your purchase is for a class at Arbutus.
