Advanced English Conversation and Writing for Careers

This course focuses on the skills and vocabulary needed for advanced conversation and writing that students may not be exposed to in the course of daily life, as well as basic writing organization and formatting guidelines within business settings.

Students will practice their business communication skills to become more effective writers and communicators by analyzing and discussing the differences between effective and ineffective emails and reports and by role-playing conversations at business meetings and lunches/dinners. The course will be tailored to meet the needs of each group of students.

The overarching method used for communicating effectively in this course includes the 4Cs:

Clarity

  • Is the purpose of what you want to say or write clear to the receiver?

Conciseness

  • Are you getting to the point so that the receiver is not annoyed by lengthy or verbose communication?

Completeness

  • Are you adding appropriate details to avoid vagueness and/or misinterpretation?

Correctness

  • Are you using accurate words and phrases to convey your meaning and are they appropriate for the intended audience (receivers)?
