A sample of portrait photography class project showcasing an environmental portrait in New York City

This hands-on class is your introduction to the art of portrait photography, using New York City as your canvas. Explore a range of portrait styles while learning how to create powerful environmental portraits on the streets of NYC.

IMPORTANT: Students must have their own smartphone or digital camera.

    • Explore self-expression through photography, inspired by Cindy Sherman's radical self-portraits and Elina Brotherus' introspective use of space.
    • Learn to see fashion and street style as art, channeling Bill Cunningham's eye for capturing the unique energy of New Yorkers in their everyday lives.
    • Capture spontaneous, candid moments, learning how the environment can tell a story alongside the subject.
    • Connect with your subject on a deeper level, drawing inspiration from Mary Ellen Mark's intimate portraits that showcase the power of emotion and storytelling.
