AI and Ethics in Writing

In this self-paced course, you’ll explore the ethical dimensions of writing in an age of artificial intelligence. Through case studies, you’ll explore how emerging AI tools both challenge and reinforce traditional standards of ethical communication in academic and professional settings.

The 5-module course will take approximately two to three hours to complete and begins with grounding in the core principles of ethical writing, including academic honesty, authorship, and intellectual responsibility. You’ll engage with the evolving responses of writing instructors and scholars, critically examining a range of pedagogical and disciplinary approaches to AI and the ethical complexities of student work generated or supported by AI. You’ll explore practical frameworks to help you navigate decisions around fairness, authorship, consent, and transparency. By the end, you’ll develop strategies for teaching writing with integrity in AI-enhanced classrooms and craft your own AI Philosophy grounded in personal and disciplinary values.

This course will prepare you to:

  • Analyze how AI contributes to conversations of ethics in the field of writing studies, particularly with regard to academic honesty.
  • Evaluate how post-secondary instructors of writing are responding to the use of AI in their classrooms and its impact on pedagogy.
  • Apply ethical principles of AI use in your teaching, lesson planning, and instructional design.
  • Assess ethical considerations of AI for writing, including authorship, citation, and originality.
  • Make informed, discipline-specific decisions about the best uses of AI in your teaching.
