This swift survey course will examine the glorious 1100s and 1200s by looking at the development of institutions that will mark the High Middle Ages. We will start with the shift from serfdom to the freedom of the lively cities as they spread across Europe. This gave rise to the universities and the excitement of scholasticism and philosophy. Deeply personal mysticism began to flourish.
