World War I and Modernism

This course will explore the impact of World War One on modernist American and British writers and poets. The tragedy of the First World War generated a vibrant wave of creative works that grappled with mortality, a loss of innocence, the failure of civilization, and the brutality of war itself. This course will examine how the works of writers and poets including Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Robert Graves, Wilfred Owen, and Siegfried Sassoon revolutionized how humanity understands the world.
