British Cinema: 20th Century

The United Kingdom has had a significant film industry for over a century. While film production reached an all-time high in 1936, the "golden age" of British cinema is usually thought to have occurred in the 1940s and 1950s, during which the directors David Lean, Michael Powell and Carol Reed produced their most critically acclaimed works. But the 1960s and 1970s were an equally rich period, with the emergence of such young talents as Tony Richardson, John Boorman, Lindsay Anderson, Ken Russell and many others. This course will be an informative, educational and entertaining look at some of the best British films, directors and performers of the 20th century. As always, an excess of film clips will dazzle your sensations.
