This course will explore the first six years of the Third Reich (1933-1939) to understand how Hitler and the Nazi party consolidated party and created a totalitarian regime in Germany. The course will consider how and why the Nazis prepared Germany to wage a total war and will also examine the attempts by individuals and groups in Germany and beyond to resist the totalitarian regime. This course will examine politics, economics, culture, and society during this period and consider the factors that precipitated the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe.
