Chinese Classical Poetry

This course covers major classic poems and poets in ancient Chinese literary history, including works from the Book of Poetry, Songs of Chu, and poets in Tang and Song dynasties. This class is directed lectures, as well as discussion, with an emphasis on the analysis of the aspects of themes, imagery and poetic effects, in relation to the poet's historical/personal background. Through the exploration of selected poems, this class will provide a general comprehension of ancient Chinese socio-cultural dimensions out of the trajectory of Chinese poetry reading.
