The Stories of Guy de Maupassant

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a master of the short story. A protégé of Flaubert, he has been referred to as "the father" of the modern short story, in that he showed future writers how short fiction may be used to reveal various aspects of human nature and the human condition in a thoughtful, engaging manner. During this course, students will read and discuss thirty-two of Maupassant's 300 short stories. These 32 stories, selected by the instructor, will expose students to the wide range of subjects and themes covered by this gifted writer.
