Basic Garment Construction   

Learn the basics of garment construction using commercial patterns as the basis for your creations. This course covers how to take accurate measurements, safely cut fabric, and make basic alterations. Students may choose to create their own holiday costumes or just learn how to alter ready-made clothing so that it fits. Beginner and novice costume makers will benefit from learning how to read garment pattern instructions, as well as choosing the right materials for their sewing projects.

    Required book: The Fitting Book, ISBN 9783033083745.

    Students are expected to bring a working sewing machine with straight stitch, zigzag stitch and buttonhole making capability.

    • Marking tools - pens, markers, tailor’s chalk and pencils
    • 60-inch measuring tape
    • Seam ripper
    • Tailors chalk
    • Store bought pattern non stretch fabric for beginners with no zippers
    • Paper scissors
    • Fabric scissors
    • Dritz French Curve Styling ruler
    • Bee Tracing Paper, 24 inches wide
    • Thread- black, white and one that matches your project
    • Needles for your machine and hand sewing needles
    • Pins or sewing “Clover” clips
    • Pin cushion for wrist or magnetic pin cushion
    • Pattern weights
    • Storage to carry everything to class
    • Fabric
