This art course takes inspiration from seasonal landscapes – a perfect way to appreciate the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. With step-by-step instructions and lots of exercises, students will learn to draw and paint from their reference. This course will take students through the basics of acrylic painting, starting with the types of materials and tools that one can use, to the techniques in handling the medium. Students will learn about value, basic composition, color mixing, blending and the mechanics of acrylics. Approaches such as "wet in wet" and working in layers will be introduced. With demonstrations and individual guidance, students will be able to start working on their own piece at their own pace. This course will equip students with basic knowledge and understanding of the medium.
Supply List
- Acrylic paints: recommended are artist or professional grade acrylics. Some of my favorite brands are Liquitex, Golden, Blick studio, Masters touch (Hobby Lobby), Artist Loft (Michaels) brand. I wouldn’t recommend using cheap craft paint for this class to get best results although if that’s what you only have, it’s okay to use for learning and practice. Recommended colors: Titanium white, Ivory Black, Cadmium red, Quinacridone red or Permanent Rose or Alizarin crimson, Cadmium yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna (brown), Hooker's Green or Sap Green Optional colors: Prussian Blue, Viridian Green, any other favorite colors you want to bring
- Flat and Filbert brushes for acrylic painting (synthetic or hog bristle): in variety of sizes – ¾ inch wide, #6, #8, #10, round brush (size 2 or 4 for details), or your favorite brushes
- Palette for color mixing: either, glass, plastic or paper plate - your preference. You can also use a palette paper pad. I use Richeson Gray Matters Paper Palette
- Canvas panels or stretched canvas: One measuring 11”x 14” or 12”x16”
- Canvas pad or mixed media paper for practicing techniques (9”x 12”)
- Water container

- Photography: Beginning Basics Through Advanced Techniques
-
Online registration closes 1 week before the class start date.
This course will begin with understanding basic camera functions and how to adjust camera settings. Students will learn the 3 principles of lens aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings to create quality images. Further instruction will include composition, lighting techniques, and camera handling to improve image quality. Lessons will become more advanced and build on the basics presented in previous sessions. Some of the more advanced topics will include Astro-photography (moon and stars), Macro-photography (extreme close-ups), dramatic lighting techniques, and other fun and interesting ways to create striking images. There will also be discussions about how to choose editing software, how to catalog and store images for easy retrieval and an overview of digital imaging technology and image file types.
Each class will have a suggested shooting idea for students to practice, sharing their results for review and critique with an online Flicker account. A camera with adjustable settings is recommended for the course. No books required. Presentation notes will be provided.
Students would need a camera/lens kit.
