    Designed especially for active retirees, this class focuses on building strength, improving balance, and enhancing everyday movement with confidence and ease. Led by an experienced Pilates instructor, each session offers clear guidance, supportive progressions, and plenty of options to meet you where you are.

    Participants will learn foundational Pilates principles - posture, breathing, alignment, and core support - while gently strengthening the legs, hips, back, shoulders, and abdominal muscles. Special attention is given to balance, joint health, and functional movements such as standing, walking, reaching, and getting up and down safely.

    Classes are mat-based and low-impact, with the use of chairs and simple props for added comfort and support. No prior Pilates experience is required. This course is ideal for students who want to stay strong, steady, and active - whether for daily life, hobbies, or travel - while enjoying a calm, encouraging community environment.

    Please bring a mat and wear stretchy clothes.

    Required Form: All fitness/movement class students are required to complete the “Activity Release, Limitation of Liability and Assumption of Risk” form before participating the class. Please click Activity and Release, Limitation of Liability and Assumption of Risk to download the form and bring the completed form to the instructor on the first day of the class.

    Please join us as we continue our study of Washington geology! Geologic Tales of Washington will build on the geologic story we have been teasing out of Washington's landscape in previous courses. This course is designed to appeal to people new to geology as well as to students who have attended previous classes in this course series. There will be something new for everyone!

    Topics discussed will include evolving plate tectonic models, a deeper dive into our glacial history, more on Washington's earthquakes, and new thoughts on Washington's mountain ranges including the beautiful volcanic cones of our Cascades.

    This class will meet online on 4/14 and 5/19. On all other days, class will meet in person at N201.

    Painting Seasonal Blooms is a watercolor painting course inspired by the favorite blooms of each season, offering a perfect way to appreciate the beauty of change and color in nature. With step-by-step instructions and lots of drawing exercises, you'll learn to draw and paint from your reference (image or a real flower). This course will also explore the basics of watercolor painting, starting with the types of materials and tools that you can use, and moving on to techniques in handling the medium. You'll learn about value, basic composition, color mixing, blending, and the mechanics of watercolor. Approaches such as wet-in-wet and working in layers will be introduced. With demonstrations and ongoing individual guidance, you'll develop your own artwork at your own pace. By the end of the course, you'll gain a solid foundation in watercolor and feel comfortable to pursue your passion for watercolor!

    Supply List:

    • Watercolor pad with minimum of 10 sheets and size not smaller than 9"x12". Recommended brands include Fabriano, Arches, Canson, Strathmore or any similar brands.
    • Any paper for quick sketches.
    • Watercolor paint set with basic colors with minimum of 12 colors. Recommended brands include Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smiths or any other artist brand.
    • Watercolor brushes in sizes, 8, 6, 2, 0 round brushes. Recommended brands include Winsor & Newton, Princeton (Aqua Elite or Neptune), or any watercolor brushes.
    • Palette suitable for watercolor (Plastic)
    • Drawing pencils (2B & 4B) or mechanical pencil.
    • Eraser/kneaded eraser.
    • 1 Small spray bottle for water (optional)
    • 1 Large container for water

    Your camera and your knowledge of how to use it certainly matter when it comes to making memorable photographs. But your knowledge of the principles of composition and when to apply them - and when not to! - matter even more. Explore the key principles one by one with weekly assignments practicing each to share for feedback the following week. Meet the challenge to practice each principle in turn. For all skill levels using any camera, smart phone to mirrorless. All you need is a passion for photography and a wish to make photographs your friends and family will admire.

    This class will meet online except for 5/19 class which will meet in-person for a photography shoot at location to be announced in class.

     
    Online courses require an internet connection and the ability to interact both through audio and video using either a web cam/microphone, speakers/headset using a computer or via a mobile phone connection. Depending upon the class, students will need to download either Zoom or Microsoft Teams apps to attend and participate in class sessions. There is no additional cost for these applications.

Along the way, we'll discover the influence of radio DJs who helped introduce rock 'n' roll to mainstream America. You'll hear great music, see rare film and video clips, and examine the legacies of the pioneers who made lasting contributions to this popular genre. We'll play 50s rock trivia, hear rare songs, and explore how this music shaped American culture in its early days. So, what was that first rock song? Was it from the 1950s, the '40s, or even earlier? You may be surprised!

Through rare photos, film and audio clips, we see and hear how early close vocal group harmonizing developed into an art form that became part of mainstream rock 'n' roll during the 1950s and 1960s. Along with your favorites, you'll hear rare studio outtakes and alternate recordings that will demonstrate how this exciting and enjoyable musical style came into being and flourished during those years.
