    In this beginner-friendly class, students will learn how to simplify floral and botanical shapes, apply color theory concepts and create floral and garden paintings that look vibrant, fresh and joyful. Students will paint several floral compositions and garden scenes and may include pollinators such as bees, butterflies, etc. Students will learn skills to paint with acrylics using blood-loose brushstrokes, underpainting and layering, composition basics and mixing a strong color palette. These tips, techniques and art skills will add to a student's painting practice. Additionally, students will understand color values and temperatures and to create depth and dimension in their floral garden paintings.

    Supply List:

    • Acrylic paints: recommended are artist or professional grade acrylics. Some of my favorite brands are Liquitex, Golden, Blick studio, Masters touch (Hobby Lobby), Artist Loft (Michaels) brand. I wouldn’t recommend using cheap craft paint for this class to get best results although if that’s what you only have, it’s okay to use for learning and practice. Recommended colors: Titanium white, Black or Payne’s grey, Cadmium red, Quinacridone red or Permanent Rose or Alizarin crimson, Cadmium yellow, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna (brown), Quinacridone magentaOptional colors: Prussian or Phthalo Blue, Viridian Green, any other favorite colors you want to bring
    • Flat and round brushes for acrylic painting (synthetic or hog bristle): in variety of sizes – ¾ inch wide, #6, #8, #10, round brush (size 2 or 4 for details), or your favorite brushes 
    • Palette for color mixing: either wood, glass, plastic or paper plate - your preference. You can also use a palette paper pad. I use a Masterson Sta-Wet Palette
    • Canvas panels or stretched canvas: two measuring 9”x12” or 11”x14”, two measuring 12”x12”, one or two measuring 12”x16”
    • Water container 
    • Pencil and eraser
    • Rags or paper towels
    • Optional: Small water mist bottle (to keep paints moist on palette)Watercolor paper or pad (140lb cold pressed) 9”X12” inch in size. Some favorites are Canson/Arches/ Strathmore. These would be for practice sketch
     
    Please treat this supply list like a recommended resource guide so please don’t feel the need to go out and buy all of the supplies on this list. This class will be just as awesome if you choose to use your favorite art materials and use whatever supplies you have on hand and can find.

Depending upon the class, students will need to download either Zoom or Microsoft Teams apps to attend and participate in class sessions. There is no additional cost for these applications.

    Students will explore the essays in David McCullough's "Brave Companions: Portraits in History." This book is a collection of essays with biographical sketches of fascinating men and women whose purpose and determination had a profound impact. Following weekly reading assignments, students will discuss the essays and explore the influence of these historical figures. Students will need to bring a copy of the book to class; hardcover, paperback or eBook are all acceptable.

    Supply List

    For the first day of class, please bring whatever brand of paper and colored pencils you already have for initial mark-making exercises. Supplies will be discussed in detail on the first day of class.

    • 9x12 Drawing paper: Strathmore, Canson, Arches, and others make great paper suitable for colored pencil artwork. As long as the paper has some tooth and body, any paper will be fine
    • 24 pencil set (minimum): Prismacolor Premiere Colored Pencils, Caran d'ache, Crayola, Derwent, Faber-Castell are great options, but any brand that you already have will work just fine
    • #2 B pencil: Regular graphite pencil for taking notes etc. No need to buy a specific brand
    • Kneaded eraser
    • Hand-held metal sharpener
    • 9x12 Tracing paper
    • Clip board
    • Drafter's Brush
    • Fixative Spray (final fixative, not workable)

No drawing experience or expertise necessary. Instruction will be tailored to suit each individual's skill level.

    This course is designed to help students turn their memoir or other nonfiction manuscript into a finished, published book. Learn to take the first draft of your memoir and ensure it is polished and ready for publication, or turn a complete proofread manuscript into a professional-looking book that is available for sale at online and offline retailers. In this course, students will focus on publishing options for memoir and nonfiction writing. Students will explore cover design and interior layout (including resources for doing it yourself and/or hiring freelance expert help), and more. You'll also learn simple but effective options for spreading the word about your new book.

    This participative discussion class looks at national and international current affairs each week. Discussions include politics and other topic matters suggested by the group. Events are considered based on their effects today and into the future, historical context and leadership.
