In October of 2020, The Borough of Manhattan Community College became the first school in the CUNY system to deliver a certification course in cloud computing to New Yorkers. The year 2020 was a significant one for cloud computing, the Covid19 pandemic and resulting move to remote work accelerated the pace of businesses migrating at least some if not most of their IT infrastructure to the cloud. The trends we see in electronic commerce, FinTech, EdTech, and all things Tech are a testament to the benefits that end users enjoy thanks to cloud computing.
In August of 2011, Marc Andreessen’s quote, “software is eating the world” was published in the Wall Street Journal. Over a decade later, this statement still rings true as more and more fortune 500 companies rely on the cloud to support their business needs. Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, and the wildly popular Software as a Service have matured to the point that small business owners now have access to the same computing power as a large enterprise in Silicon Valley. For this reason, Information Technology has undergone a significant transformation with Chief Technology Officers trading the cost associated with on-prem data centers for the pay-as-you-go model of cloud service providers. In the last decade, legacy information systems and traditional IT infrastructure have been forever changed by DevOps and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
It is estimated that from 2022 to 2032 the value of the Over the Top Services market (OTT) will grow by Almost US $ 7.0 Trillion. Think Hulu, Disney+, and of course Netflix. Speaking of Netflix, after a process that took seven years, the streaming service announced that they had decommissioned their last physical data center and completed their full migration to Amazon Web Services. This begs the question, worldwide, how many cloud engineers are needed to support the virtualization of our Information and Communications Technology? The demand for DevOps, Machine Learning and all things related to the cloud continues to rise. With every passing day, our modern day infrastructure will rely on skilled professionals to create, maintain and secure resources in the cloud. These individuals need the learning community and hands-on experience provided by institutions such as BMCC.
BMCC is an Active AWS Member Institution that enables students to develop skills in On-Prem, Cloud and Hybrid deployments. As demand for technology professionals continues to grow, the Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development is committed to delivering an experience that provides students with the skills, training, and academic support needed as they journey into the cloud.
Also, please be aware that BMCC Continuing Education's future course offerings will continue to be delivered in either a Traditional classroom face-to-face format or 100% On-Line format or a Hybrid model that mixes both live and online course delivery.
