Defense and Security Diplomacy

Defense and security diplomacy is an essential element of international statecraft. It is conducted between countries which are both allies and actual or potential adversaries. While its practice often involves military professionals, civilian national security officials are also often involved. The course will explore critical issues such as to what extent defense and security diplomacy can mitigate the risk of conflict between adversaries as well as its utility between allied nations. In particular, the role of peacetime diplomacy will be examined in the context of the contemporary global security order.

Job Outlook

Projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicate that employment of international relations professionals – including diplomats – will increase by 6% through 2029. This is faster than the average growth rate for all occupations.
