Traditionally Origami follows 3 rules: Models are folded from a single square, no cuts, and no adhesive. Modern origami has loosened these requirements for the sake of art and exploration. Origami design beginning with other geometric shapes is now common.
Included in this course will be a Sakura Star from a pentagon, a bowl from an octagon, and a flower/star from a hexagon. We’ll fold more as time allows.
A word to totally new folders: These are firmly intermediate level models. However, if you are willing to use the recording, start over and be persistent, you will find increasing success with each attempt. Andrea’s overhead camera makes it possible for you to see how I make each fold.

- Rock, Rap, and Resistance
-
Calling all music lovers—this is not your typical lecture series. This course is a fist-pumping, head-nodding, lyric-deconstructing journey through the music of protest, rebellion, and revolution—past and present. Each week, we’ll explore powerful themes like racial injustice, anti-capitalism, mental health stigma, women’s empowerment, and youth-led uprisings through the lens of music that demands to be heard. From icons you know—Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Aretha Franklin—to modern firebrands like Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Macklemore, and Logic, we’ll pair legendary anthems with contemporary tracks to see how music fights back across generations. Each session includes two main songs (usually one rock/pop and one rap/hip-hop), lyric analysis, music videos, and live performances.
No Class 3/13

- "How Did You Do That?" Impressive but Easy Origami Creations
-
Did you know that origami techniques are used in space, architecture, fashion, and medicine? Some major breakthroughs can thank origami for their development.
Did you know there are many different types of origami? In modular origami you make several copies of a single unit and then connect them without glue or tape. Action origami models move and change. Wet folding facilitates delicacy and curves. Pureland origami allows only mountain and valley folds. Tessellations cover a plane with twist folds. Origami is an exciting and varied artform to explore!
Start your origami journey here. During our 6 weeks together, you will fold several models that together will provide a peek into this variety and begin to develop your technique! You will be asked to support your learning and enjoyment by a small amount of folding outside of class.
Supplies will be provided for this intro course.

- Watercolor Painting for Beginners
-
In this course students will explore and learn fundamental watercolor techniques, such as dry brush, wet on wet, glazing and washes, color theory, and brushwork to build your confidence so you can create pieces that you will be proud of. No prior experience required, just bring your enthusiasm and creativity!
Supplies needed: Pencil, eraser, paper towels, 2-3 round brushes size 6-10, small mixing palette, 2 water jars (can be mason jars, plastic cups, anything to hold water), masking tape. Watercolor paper arches/ cold press/ 140lb small pad. As far as paints go I recommend Daniel Smith extra fine watercolor- set of 6, essential 5ml tubes and an additional burnt sienna tube. You can find most of these on amazon, dickblick, Jerry’s Artarama, Michaels, and sometimes Walmart. If you are signed up with a friend you can share paper and paints, but you’ll want you own pencil, brushes and palette. The paper is important because the techniques will not work well on an inexpensive watercolor paper.

Although this course builds upon a class previously offered last year, new participants can join and fully participate. It is suitable for either those who use smart phones or dedicated cameras. The goal isn’t how to use your particular “camera” but rather, how to compose and get a better image to work with. We will review basic photographic fundamentals and qualities that create a “good” image. Students will be asked to submit photos for critiquing and constructive criticism by class members. Although the goal is to take the “perfect” photo in-camera we will see how to improve images by post-processing. I will use Photoshop Elements, but the same principles are transferable to other means. Consequently, it isn’t essential that participants have that particular software on their computer. Questions and comments are encouraged with plenty of back-and-forth interaction. Weather permitting I’d like to fit a “meet and greet” field trip at a time as convenient for as many people as possible. I’d appreciate suggestions from you.
