Do you have physical limitations that prevent you from participating in a traditional yoga class? Then chair yoga is for you! During our six-week class together, you will learn sequences to open and align the body from a seated position that you can make part of your daily routine. We will also explore meditation and breathing practices that decrease anxiety and generate a positive connection to the body.

This is a continuation of the Ukulele 1 and 2 courses from last spring. In this course we will continue to have FUN playing ukulele together in class and expanding our ukulele repertoire. Using class hand-outs and YouTube videos we will be learning new chords and songs in the keys of G, D, A F and Am, focusing on becoming independent life-long ukulele players! Course requirements: a ukulele, a tuner, experience playing in the key of C, and a commitment to 10 minutes of practice each day at home between classes.

Have you been wanting to express yourself a little in Spanish? In this beginning set of classes, we will have FUN in SPANISH through mini conversations, games, poems, and songs. This is a FULL PARTICIPATION CLASS! We will not be “studying” Spanish, we will be using it from day one in class to have FUN and acquire it naturally – following the philosophy that what you can DO with a language is more important than what you KNOW about the language.

This seminar will explore the strategies of the five key “warlords” of World War II: Winston Churchill, Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. How did their early years (including childhood) and interwar struggles influence their views on war and the greater strategic goals that drove them? How should they be ranked? Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt were the victors, but which one was the most successful? Hitler and Mussolini strategies for victory ended in disaster and defeat … but was there a time and strategy that might have brought them victory? These are the themes / questions that will be discussed.

Well-behaved women rarely make history—and the women in this course definitely did not behave! From pirate queen Grace O'Malley to poet Anne Sexton, and from pop icon Madonna to modern women under the public microscope like Karen Read, we'll explore how women who challenge expectations are labeled, judged, and sometimes punished.

Through short readings, media, storytelling, and lively discussion, we’ll connect past and present and ask: what has changed, and what hasn’t? Come ready to think, share, and maybe stir up a little trouble. An optional visit to Salem or a related local site may be suggested for those interested.

Have you always wanted to play the guitar to accompany yourself singing or is it just something you have always wanted to try? Then this introduction to Guitar course is for you! We will cover all of the basic fundamentals needed to learn to play the guitar, whether it is on your own, or with formal lessons. Discussions will include how to care for your instrument, how to tune, and how to play with proper posture and correct technique. Both chords and melody will be covered, and we will play familiar songs as a means for learning. Also, regardless of each individuals pace all songs can be arranged for all abilities. This course will focus on learning how to play using chord diagrams and tablature background. Traditional music notation will be introduced and explained but will not be the focus. Students will need: a guitar in playable condition, guitar picks, a clip-on tuner, or app, a guitar strap is optional but recommended. Folders, chord charts, reference materials and handouts of song sheets for the lessons will be provided by the instructor. Students of all backgrounds are welcome and those that have already taken the class come as a review, and to continue working on the songs we did, but with more advanced skills.

This two-part series explains how, with Churchill’s support, the British efforts at destroying the Nazi tyranny of World War Two, resulted in the victory of the Allies in 1945. In particular, we examine the formation of a very secret organization, the Special Operations Executive, SOE, and some examples of specific operations that took place in occupied Europe. This involved intelligence gathering and sabotage that gave support to the resistance in those occupied countries.

Part 1 explains the history of the intelligence services in Britain and the formation of the Special Operations Executive and Part 2 covers several of the various operations that took place during SOE’s existence.

Curious about Mahjong and ready to learn a game that combines strategy, skill, and social fun? Join Audrey Maw and her team of instructors from 4 Blondes Mahjong for this beginner-friendly introduction to American Mahjong. No prior experience is required. Participants will learn the fundamentals of the game, including tiles, rules, basic strategies, and game play in a welcoming and supportive environment. By the end of the course, you'll have the confidence and foundation needed to join a Mahjong table anywhere. All materials will be provided.

Continue your Spanish language journey in this engaging 5th section of our Introductory Spanish course for adults! Designed for those who have completed Sections 1-4 or are a returning student, or have some basic familiarity with the language, this class builds on foundational skills while emphasizing practical communication and cultural understanding. In this course, you will expand your vocabulary and add to grammar learned in previous session through interactive lessons and real-life scenarios. Key topics include: expanding everyday vocabulary - using subject pronouns and describing people, enhancing listening and speaking skills through conversations, and exploring culture and traditions of the diverse Spanish/Hispanic world. Join us for a fun and friendly class as you gain confidence in your Spanish abilities and develop a deeper appreciation for the language and its cultures.

“Despite the outpouring of books, movies, museums, and courses, a coherent explanation of the why such ghastly carnage erupted in the heart of civilized Europe in the twentieth century still seems elusive.” This a quote from Peter Hayes book, “Explaining the Holocaust.” This is the inspiration for this seminar which examines many of the questions dealing with the Holocaust. Why the Jews? Why the Germans? Why a transition from murder to genocide? Could more have been done to prevent the Holocaust? Why was Jewish resistance ineffectual? Why such limited help from the outside? Finally, we conclude with the legacy of the Holocaust and its lessons for us today. Understanding the rise of Hitler and the Holocaust is more relevant today than ever.

This course will explore the life and music of James Brown.  The Hardest Working Man in Show Biz, Mr. Please, Please, Please, The Minister of the New Super Heavy Funk, Mr. Brown is arguably one of the most important musical figures that America has ever produced and whose legacy is often disregarded and unappreciated.  This six-week course will explore his life, his music, the development of his new musical styles, and his influences on music and society both of his era and contemporary times.

Italy, a country of almost 60 million people, is the world’s 4th most visited nation thanks to its rich history and culture, and its stunning cuisine and scenery. This course will cover important aspects of Italy’s history such as the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the destruction of Pompeii, and the creation of the Republic of Venice. We’ll explore some of the country’s social and cultural norms and its contributions to art, music, and film. You’ll learn a bit about the Italian language, including some common words and phrases and how they’re pronounced. Finally, we’ll take a virtual tour of Italy’s diverse regions, discuss Italian cuisine, and explore some travel tips for those thinking about visiting the country.  

Often called “Indicator Species,” bats serve as a vital pulse for the health of our environment. This course offers an in-depth exploration of the nine bat species native to Massachusetts and the critical roles they play in our local ecosystem.  We will address the modern challenges facing these mammals, including the impact of White-Nose-Syndrome - a fungal disease that has claimed the lives of millions of bats - and the common misconceptions regarding Covid-19. Drawing from years of experience in wildlife rehabilitation and my time spent with Batty, the Big Brown Bat, my educational ambassador, I will share unique, firsthand insights into their complex social behaviors, (such as purring when content). I look forward to leading you on this educational adventure to uncover the wonders of the misunderstood bats and the vital conservation efforts needed to save them!

This course will cover the history of Massachusetts and Boston, in particular, from the settlement of the Pilgrims to the present day.  It will not only cover the major (and some minor) events of the last four hundred years but also discuss a number of people who lived, worked, in the state that have had an effect on our country as a whole. 

Since its very inception, television has been a controversial medium. While it provides news, educational opportunities, entertainment, and fosters social connections, it has also been blamed for sedentary lifestyles, reduced attention spans, consumerism, and promoting violence. In this course we’ll explore the influence that television has had using theories and research from the fields of Social Psychology and Media Studies. We’ll consider how the medium has both affected and reflected societal trends by examining TV programming across the decades and will focus on its effects on our attitudes, behavior, and psychological well-being. 

This class explores how America’s three largest Abrahamic traditions have shaped—and been shaped by—public life in the United States. Using a modern historical lens, we’ll examine immigration and demographic change, church–state debates, civil rights and social movements, interfaith cooperation and conflict, and the evolving place of religion in elections, education, media, and law. Classes will balance concise background lectures with guided discussion and case studies designed to build shared context and encourage respectful conversation across differing viewpoints. No prior background is required—only curiosity and a willingness to engage thoughtfully with a central question of modern American life: what role should faith play in a diverse democracy?

Social Psychology is the scientific study of how our attitudes, emotions, and behavior can be influenced by the presence of others. In this introduction to the field, we’ll focus on topics like the importance of social norms that govern much of our behavior and interesting cross-cultural differences in those norms. We’ll also discuss how attitudes are formed and learn about various persuasion tactics used by advertising and sales professionals. Finally, we’ll cover classic topics from social psychology such as conformity, obedience to authority, interpersonal attraction, aggression, and pro-social behavior.

Many of the women of the Old Testament were dangerous, strategic, politically savvy, and morally complicated. This lively discussion-based course explores fascinating women whose stories shaped the culture, politics, and history of the ancient world. Through storytelling, historical context, and group discussion, participants will examine figures such as Deborah, Ruth, Esther, Jezebel, and Rahab while exploring themes of power, survival, leadership, loyalty, and rivalry. Participants may find themselves identifying with more than one of these unforgettable women. No prior religious background is required. Planned as Part I of a two-part series.

In this course students will explore and learn fundamental watercolor techniques, such as dry brush, wet on wet, glazing and washes, color theory, and brushwork to build your confidence so you can create pieces that you will be proud of. No prior experience required, just bring your enthusiasm and creativity!  

Supplies needed:   Pencil, eraser, paper towels, 2-3 round brushes size 4,8,12 mixing palette, 2 water jars (can be mason jars, plastic cups, anything to hold water), a small spray bottle, masking tape.  Watercolor paper arches/ cold press/ 140lb small pad.  As far as paints go I recommend Daniel Smith extra fine watercolor- set of 6, essential 5ml tubes and an additional burnt sienna tube.  You can find most of these on amazon, dickblick, Jerry’s Artarama, Michaels, and sometimes Walmart.  If you are signed up with a friend you can share paper and paints, but you’ll want your own pencil, brushes and palette.  The paper is important because the techniques will not work well on inexpensive watercolor paper.

Designing a Mindful Life is an interactive course for those who want to create a more intentional, grounded next chapter. Blending evidence-informed life design and mindfulness, this course invites participants to pause, reflect, experiment, and move toward choices that feel aligned with their interests and values. Through guided meditation, creative exercises, reflective writing, and conversation, participants will clarify what matters, recognize patterns that no longer serve them, and imagine new possibilities for work, relationships, creativity, and daily life.

This is the last of Jim’s four art seminars. As an art movement postmodernism to some extent defies definition – as there is no one postmodern style or theory on which it is hinged. It embraces many different approaches to art making and may be said to begin with Pop Art in the 1960s and to embrace much of what followed including Conceptual Art, Neo-Expressionism, Installation Art, and numerous other schools of art too numerous to mention here

A significant percentage of the world’s population lives with the threats posed by various natural hazards. In this course we’ll explore the causes and effects of natural events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, and the places most likely to experience them. We’ll also look at reasons why people choose to live in risky places and some of the factors that affect their perceptions of risk and their likelihood of preparing for potential disasters. Finally, we’ll address some of the social and psychological reactions of disaster victims and factors that can help in recovering from such traumatic events.

How can you tell what medical technology is truly useful and what is just hype? In this class we will learn to find credible information on wearable devices like fitness trackers, as well as health apps and other medical technology? We will also explore patient portals and insurance-sponsored wearables, including issues of privacy. In addition to sharing what I have learned as a health communicator, I encourage students to share what they have personally tried – from Fitbit to continuous glucose monitors to getting advice from ChatGPT – and whether they recommend them for other seniors. We also discuss the tricky task of talking with your doctor about information from personal devices without overstepping your role as a patient. 

The philosophy behind this course is simple: we appreciate poetry best when we read it with others. Our community combines returning members, working poets, and poetry lovers: we welcome new members to our group because they bring fresh perspectives. And you are welcome to simply “listen in” if you’re not sure how to talk about poetry: you will learn! Over the course of the semester, we will discuss various poems written in the English language from the Renaissance to today. We will read poems out loud while practicing our scansion skills, noting patterns of sound and rhythm. We will tease out meanings. We will discuss the historical and context that frames each poet and poem. Our goal will be to work towards a richer understanding of each poem together.

Dr. Zeynep Leuenberger will launch Senior College's new Human Rights series this fall with Human Rights I: Environmental Sustainability, the first course in an ongoing sequence that will continue exploring critical global human rights issues through future offerings, including Human Rights II: The Rights of Women and Children and Human Rights III: Global Educational Access, which will be offered in subsequent semesters.

This course outlines the deep relationship between environmental health and human well-being through human rights and public sector economic lenses. It introduces the basic principles of human rights law and practice tied to environmental sustainability through discussion of key issues such as water quality and scarcity, climate related migration, agriculture and environment, climate change, and pollution mitigation. Finally, the course reviews solutions offered by international non-governmental and governmental organizations.

In this course on modern Ireland, students will explore contemporary Ireland through the lens of renowned Irish writers. Participants will explore a curated selection of three impactful books, each offering a unique perspective on the cultural, social, and historical fabric of modern Ireland.

Transforming the Mediterranean Sea into an open, international waterway during the Barbary Wars (1801-1816) was driven by the United States’ refusal to pay state-sanctioned tributes for safe passage.  By employing military force, the U.S. forced North African corsairs to recognize the universal “freedom of the seas” for merchant shipping

Barbary pirates from the states of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli continually attacked merchant vessels in the Mediterranean, seizing cargo, and demanding massive annual tribute payments.

Most major European powers—including Great Britain, France, Spain, and others—paid regular tributes to the Barbary States. President Thomas Jefferson decided to stop making tribute payments and dispatched the newly established U.S. Navy to the Mediterranean. This culminated in the First Barbary War (1801–1805) to force Tripoli and other regimes to end their attacks. Piracy resumed during the War of 1812, prompting the Second Barbary War (1815) under President James Madison.

Join me for a six-week exploration of the two wars that established the Mediterranean Sea as an open international waterway. There will be slides, handouts and the second half of the class will be devoted to questions and discussions with reference to events in the Strait of Hormuz.

This beginner-level tap dancing course is designed specifically for senior adult learners who are interested in exploring movement, music, and rhythm in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Drugs, from Caffeine to Heroin, play a striking role in our Society. This course will serve to increase awareness and knowledge about drugs, addiction and their impact on society. Participants will examine their own behavior, learn strategies for prevention and intervention, and explore and debate changing societal norms.

The nature of crime is complex and constantly evolving, shaped by social, economic, cultural, and psychological factors. At its core, crime involves behavior that violates laws established by society, but what is considered criminal can vary across time and place. This course will explore the nature of crime through various theoretical perspectives, helping to explain why individuals engage in criminal behavior and how different factors influence these actions. Fields like Criminology examine how factors such as poverty, inequality, peer influence, and opportunity contribute to criminal activity. Understanding the nature of crime requires looking beyond the act itself to the broader social context in which it occurs., Dr. Alatorre's scholarship is rooted in his personal experiences with immigration, his work with homeless people, and maintaining resiliency in the face of overwhelming odds. His research aims to portray both the barriers and successes the immigrant and homeless population face. Dr. Alatorre uses a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens to contextualize and frame his scholarly work.  Dr. Alatorre's work has appeared in Debates on U.S. Immigration, Studies on Symbolic Interaction, Qualitative Inquiry, Encyclopedia of Women and Crime, The Journal of Qualitative Criminal Justice and Criminology, Contemporary Justice Review, and the Racial Equity and Justice Institute Handbook.

Last fall we dove into Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights; this fall we’ll take on the work of her sister, Charlotte Brontë, and study Jane Eyre. A quintessential Victorian Era novel, Jane Eyre follows the physical, moral, and psychological development of its eponymous character, Jane. In the first class meeting, students will be introduced to the Brontë family and the Victorian Era while also being presented with a six-week at-home reading schedule. The foundation of each class thereafter will be discussions about the reading. The discussions will touch on topics addressed in the novel with a focus on madness and sanity, psychological abuse, and class and society. Join this course for six weeks of literary discussions of the Bildungsroman Jane Eyre.

This course will focus on the upcoming midterm elections in Massachusetts and nationwide. It will examine the national conditions and issues shaping the elections for U.S. House and Senate. The course will explore the race for Governor of Massachusetts and statewide initiatives on the ballot. It will conclude with a review of the post-election results and a preview of the forthcoming 2028 presidential election.

In this course, you will read and discuss three books. All sessions will be on Zoom. The first book will be West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. The remaining two books will be announced during the first session of the group. Nan Loggains has led book groups for the past 25 years.

Although this course will build on a class previously offered last year, new participants can join and participate fully.   It is suitable for either those who use smart phones or dedicated cameras. The class won't focus on how to use a particular “camera” but rather, how to compose and get a better image out of whatever device you have.  We will review basic photographic fundamentals and qualities that create a “good” image.  Students will be asked to submit photos for critiquing and constructive criticism by class members. Although our goal will be to take a so-called “perfect” photo in-camera, we will see how to improve images by post-processing, using software: the so-called “digital darkroom.” I use Photoshop Elements, but the principles may be transferred to other software.  It’s not essential to have any software.  Questions and comments are encouraged with plenty of back-and-forth interaction.  Weather permitting I’d like to schedule a “meet and greet” field trip at a time convenient for as many people as possible.  I’d appreciate suggestions from you as to possible destinations.  

This course will examine three William Faulkner novels, As I Lay Dying, A Light in August, and The Sound and the Fury. Classes will be driven primarily by a close reading of each text and subsequent in-class discussions. The course will be on Zoom, and it will be recorded.

This will be the third of four art seminars and focuses on American Art. The post-Civil War era coexisted with rise of American economic and political power, and this is reflected in the emerging American Art scene. The main focus of this seminar is the period 1870s – 1950s. This is when the U.S. and the New York School challenged Europe as the center of modern art. This seminar will stress all the major art movements from this period. It is not necessary to have taken the earlier seminars.

A continuing series of six lectures meant to bring to light the role of both famous and lesser-known women who transgressed gender stereotypes, rose to positions of power, and shaped history in substantial ways. The first lecture will provide a brief introduction of the unique features of World History (as a distinct field/approach of History) that serves as an ideal framework to explore the lives of these extraordinary women throughout history. This course emphasizes coverage of historical women from non-Western Areas who have traditionally not received adequate attention. Session 1: Class Intro: What is World History? Writing is more than putting words on a page—it’s about capturing wisdom, laughter, and life itself, one story at a time. This writing group will offer the opportunity to take your writing to the next level. Building on the foundation of The Write Stuff Part I, this session will dive deeper into the craft of storytelling. Through guided prompts, thoughtful discussion, and hands-on practice, you’ll not only develop new ideas but also learn how to shape and strengthen your work. Together, we will explore editing techniques and the art of creating dialogue, to help your stories come alive in new and meaningful ways. Please bring a notebook and pen to each session.

Learn and discuss the US involvement in space exploration from its beginnings to how far we are going in the future. The class will discuss the technical details of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions. We remember seeing these missions; but did not understand why, I will discuss the why and reasoning behind all these missions. What were these missions to accomplish and their final goals? Show the science and engineering advancements we have made in the Shuttle and International Space Station programs. When will we return to the Moon and how far are we willing to travel into space? Is SPACEX the answer? The big question, “are we alone?” will be discussed. Math and science backgrounds are not required.

This course delves into the complex dynamics of power, privilege, and oppression within various societal structures. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will critically examine the intersections of identity, social systems, and historical contexts that contribute to the perpetuation of inequality. The power, privilege, and oppression course will delve into various societal structures, aiming to foster a deep understanding of how these forces shape our world. We will explore a diverse range of societal structures, including but not limited to, the education system, criminal justice system, media representation, healthcare, and economic institutions. Expect to look at how race, gender, sexuality, class, and ability intersect in surprising ways.

 Throughout the course, we will develop and foster critical thinking skills and empathy. Key questions we’ll tackle include: How do power dynamics show up around us? Nature as Writing Mentor explores Nature as a muse and a topic for our writing focus. Participants write in class for ten minutes and are invited to share in class. Writers are encouraged to develop a writing practice throughout our time together. 

This class is for writers of all levels and interests.  If you have taken the class before, you are welcome to join in again and no previous experience is needed. The focus for our time together is to have fun and to get new writing on the page while exploring the many benefits of nature. 

Do you have physical limitations that prevent you from participating in a traditional yoga class? Then chair yoga is for you! Chair yoga II is open to new students, but will extend the sequences from Chair Yoga I. You will learn sequences to open and align the body from a seated position that you can make part of your daily routine. We will also explore meditation and breathing practices that decrease anxiety and generate a positive connection to the body.

This is a continuation of the Ukulele 1, 2, and 3 courses. In this course we will continue to have FUN playing ukulele together in class and expanding our ukulele repertoire and techniques. We will especially be focusing on MOVEABLE chords – chord shapes on the uke that do not use any open strings and therefore can be used up and down the fretboard to play in different keys. We will continue to focus on and share how to be independent life-long ukulele players!

Course requirements: a ukulele, a tuner, experience playing in the keys of C, D, F, G, A and a commitment to10 minutes of practice each day at home between classes.

This class is building on what we learned in the September and early October classes. It is open to all who attended before and anyone who has taken Spanish years ago and wants to have FUN with SPANISH with mini-conversations, games, poems and songs. This is a FULL PARTICIPATION CLASS! We will not be “studying” Spanish, we will be using it from day one in class to have FUN and acquire it naturally – following the philosophy that what you can DO with a language is more important than what you KNOW about the language.

This course traces the dramatic changes in women’s lives in the United States from the postwar era to today. Through major turning points in politics, work, family life, education, and popular culture, we’ll explore how expectations of femininity and “the good life” evolved—and how women challenged, reshaped, and sometimes defended those expectations. Topics include second-wave and third-wave feminism, civil rights and women’s activism, reproductive politics, Title IX, changing workplaces and family structures, media and consumer culture, and contemporary debates over equality and identity. Classes blend accessible historical context with lively discussion and primary sources. No prior background required—just an interest in how social change happens and who drives it.

Ciao, Italia is designed specifically for students who have completed Buongionro, Italia and Buongiorno, Italia II. This class will be presented totally in Italian. We will focus on improved speaking skills and in depth conversations. Students will speak extemporaneously, respond to prompts, and give short presentations. We will enjoy Italian cinema,music, and literature as we increase our vocabulary and conversational skills. I look forward to seeing you all in the coming semester. A presto!

As we move towards winter, yoga II will take a deeper dive into the profound effects of yoga and contemplative practices on mental and physical health. The class will introduce an array of meditative practices you can incorporate into your everyday life. The class will continue with a gentle yoga practice and finish with these simple, easily repeated meditation practices. These techniques improve cognition, decrease anxiety, and generate a centered mind-body state.

Our backyard is far more active than you might realize! In this class we will explore the “night shift” of the wild animals that share our spaces, especially as habitat loss brings them closer to our doors. This course offers an in-depth look at the wildlife navigating our residential landscapes. Having seen a threefold increase in rehabilitation calls over the years, I am dedicated to teaching homeowners how to trade fear for understanding. Join me to learn how we can advocate for our wild nocturnal neighbors and foster an environment where we move toward a model of informed, peaceful coexistence.   

Analysis of Warfare since World War II An exploration of the evolution of warfare from 1945 to Putin’s disastrous invasion of Ukraine. We will examine counter insurgency struggles to full blown conflicts. Selective conflicts include the wars decolonization (1947-1975), the Vietnam War (1964-1975) the Iraq War (2003-2011), Afghanistan War (20001-2021), and Putin’s disastrous War in the Ukraine. The focus is NOT on a detailed history of these wars but to focus on the strategies and goals of the opposing sides and the lessons learned or not learned. How did generals and statemen adapt to various new weapons systems, theories and strategies? Noted military and civilian historians will be utilized to examine strategies- some which have been successful while some strategies reflect critical mistakes that have often been repeated time and again.

The magic of words lies in the ability to influence thoughts and evoke emotions. We will create stories from a simple picture, reading words to create a story. Words and pictures have a great effect on what we create.

Included will be the role of the President in the original Constitution, the Electoral College, and the evolution of the office through the years. Take a musical journey through the songs, stories, and cultural impact of The Beatles in this fun and engaging six-week ukulele class. Designed for beginner to intermediate players, this course combines hands-on music instruction with an exploration of how the Beatles transformed popular music, songwriting, recording techniques, and global culture.

Each week, students will learn a new Beatles song arranged for ukulele while examining a different era of the band’s evolution—from early rock-and-roll influences and Beatlemania to experimental studio innovation and enduring musical legacy. Along the way, participants will build core ukulele skills including chord transitions, rhythm patterns, strumming techniques, riffs and licks, and group performance.

This class is ideal for anyone with basic ukulele knowledge who enjoys classic rock music, group learning, and musical storytelling. Come discover why the music of the Beatles continues to inspire musicians around the world—and have fun making that music yourself.

What makes good art good?  Is it all subjective?  Are there objective qualities to art?  What _is_ art, anyway?  In this class we will look at the philosophy of art, including major theories on these big questions, and others, such as: how should we interpret artworks?  Does the artist’s intention matter?  How would we know what that is?  Are concepts like Art and Beauty connected in any way?  We will also address social questions pertaining to the arts, such as issues of censorship, public funding, and related topics.

This course will examine the difference between assassination and murder and the unique categories of American assassinations and their ramifications, It will look at both assassination attempts and completions.  Topics/subjects will include Jackson, Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, T. Roosevelt, F. Roosevelt, Truman, JFK, Ford and Reagan.  We will also look at MLK, RFK, George Wallace and John Lennon.

Discover the timeless beauty and surprising modern influence of Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D in this unique six-week ukulele ensemble course. Participants will learn how a simple and elegant chord progression became one of the most recognizable foundations in Western music—and how it continues to shape countless contemporary songs today.

Throughout the course, students will learn and rehearse four different musical parts of Pachelbel’s Canon, arranged in C for varying skill levels from beginner to advanced. Whether you are new to ukulele or an experienced player looking for an ensemble experience, each participant will have an important role in bringing the piece to life.

As the weeks progress, the class will combine these individual parts into a layered group performance, exploring melody, harmony, rhythm, and accompaniment. Students will also examine the famous Canon chord progression and discover its influence on modern pop and rock music.

This course is open to adventurous beginners through advanced ukulele players. Participants should know a few basic chords and be excited to collaborate in a supportive group setting. Come experience how a 17th-century composition and one of the most iconic pieces in classical music continues to echo through today’s music—and become part of the sound yourself.

In this class will cover wild bird attributes, including habitats, habits and diets as well as the different classes of birds: Raptors, Songbirds, Sea Birds, Game Birds, Wading Birds and Waterfowl. We will discuss different poisons and diseases, including rodenticides. We will focus on how we can protect our native birds from extinction. I am teaching this class with my new Education Barn Owl, Baby.

The course will begin with the aftermath of the JFK assassination and the effect on the remaining Kennedy siblings, focusing on the political careers of RFK and Ted, the tumultuous year 1968, RFK's assassination and Ted Kennedy's role as father figure to his nieces and nephews.  It will conclude with the 3rd generation, giving special emphasis to Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, JFK, jr. and RFK, jr.

I plan to begin with man’s first attempts to fly like a bird then move on to the early days of flight and eventually go higher and higher into deep space.  Along the way, I want to examine the physical principles that govern how we stay aloft.  What’s it like to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom and live in a so-called “weightless” environment?  We’ll examine the physics behind satellites and space telescopes and what we learn from them.   In particular, I want to discuss the Space Shuttle and Teacher in Space programs and offer personal reflections from my own experiences while being a NASA Space Ambassador and Regional Representative for the National Air and Space Museum.   

This course will focus on six critical national issues that will be prominent during Fall, 2026, especially during the mid-term election and the results of the election on the composition of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Those six issues are the national debt burden, employment and unemployment, energy use and energy policy, the role of religion in national politics, the influence of money and donors in the electoral process, and the status and direction of immigration and immigration policy. During these separate issue sections, the emphasis will be on defining the issue, the impact of the issue on national politics and national life, and the way the political parties and the government respond to the issue. Since the course will run into mid-December, the course will seek to analyze how the results of the mid-term election will likely influence how each of these issues will be affected by a new House and Senate.
