Graphic Novels of the Middle East    NEW!

In cooperation with the Brookline Public Library and Brookline Booksmith
Whether you call them graphic novels, sequential art, or just plain comics, the unique form of combining artwork and text has become a mainstay of storytelling around the world. Graphic novels often address serious contemporary topics through a wide range of visual art styles. It should come as no surprise, then, that artists and writers use this form to convey their emotional experiences with the people and places of the Middle East. This lecture will explore the vast range of storytelling forms, from diaries and memoirs, journalistic reporting and narrative history, to fantastical realism and outright surrealism, all on the timely topic of the Middle East. These tales depict life throughout the Middle East, from Egypt and Israel to Iran and Palestine, in small towns, cosmopolitan cities, and most importantly, in the hearts and minds of the creators. Join us to discover and appreciate the graphic novel for the artform it truly is. Bibliographies will be provided, including notes on which publications are available at local libraries and bookstores.
