The Death Café is a provocative title for a deeply meaningful community event. We gather and, with gentle prompting, share our relationship to death. As we share from our own experience, we learn from one another, expanding our understanding individually and collectively, helping to heal the societal stigma associated with this topic. We also find renewed purpose and commitment to make the most of our lives. After all, everyone who is born will die and the exact time is unknown. So, knowing this, what is most important? Based on the work of Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz, the Death Café was developed by Jon Underwood to help all of us change our relationship to the truest fact of life: death. Whether we are caring for an elderly parent, grieving the death of a loved one, working in a health profession, or young and fit, we all must confront mortality, our own and that of those we love.
