Urban Beekeeping

For as long as there have been cities, people have kept bees in them. The “Father of American Beekeeping” L.L. Langstroth, was introduced to beekeeping in an urban apiary in Philadelphia in the 1830’s and kept bees in his attic in Andover, MA. Ensuring that cities are a friendly place for bees and their keepers has taken on new urgency as the total number of colonies in the U.S. has been cut in half since the 1950’s. Since 2010, the Best Bees company has managed hundreds of colonies between Cape Cod and Cape Ann, on commercial rooftops, in tiny backyards, and in open fields. Both seasoned beekeepers and those without experience should enjoy this class as Best Bees Chief Apiculturist, Mark Lewis, leads a discussion on a range of topics related to honeybees, and shares tips and advice he has picked up over many years of experience. The second session will include a hive visit in Roxbury; details to be discussed in class.
