Art Deco in the Back Bay: A Walk

Art Deco, also called style moderne, is a movement in the decorative arts and architecture that originated in the '20s and developed into a major style in the U.S. during the '30s. This walking tour highlights examples of Art Deco design, from residential and commercial properties to institutional landmarks, including the second John Hancock building and New England Power Generators. As we walk, we will talk about the evolving architectural styles and character of the Back Bay and the development of new Art Deco buildings as well as the incorporation of Deco design into existing structures. We will explore the different ornamentations like bold sweeping curves, stepped forms, chevron patterns, ziggurat, fountain, sunburst, stylized floral ornament, and other Jazz Age motifs.
