The Jazz Stylings of the Iconic Thelonious Monk

From the birth of the Bebop movement, through the Cool and Avant-garde movements in subsequent years, the music of Jazz pianist Thelonious Sphere Monk never fit neatly into one particular category. Equally at home in the stride piano world as he was in the hard boppers circle, Monk set his own agenda, maintaining his rugged individualism through it all. It was only after his death in 1982, that his true gifts to Jazz began to be appreciated. Over the course of three sessions, we will play samples from all of the Jazz worlds Monk inhabited during his career, featuring his many collaborations with the greats of the age. In addition, we will take a look at the influence he has over today's artists and how they emulate his many talents.
