Sharenthood: Why We Should Think Before We Talk About Our Kids Online    NEW!

Join author, Leah Plunkett as she engages us in a discussion aimed at parents and grandparents introduced in her new book, Sharenthood: Why We Should Think Before We Talk About Our Kids Online. The book delves into the risks and steps that parents can take to protect their children from privacy harms as well as damage to their current and future life opportunities. She presents the idea of a Family Privacy Plan and advises on how to have these conversations with other adults in your children’s lives (teachers, babysitters, older siblings) so you are all on the same page when it comes to social media and other forms of online data sharing. The book describes the myriad ways that adults’ use of social media and other digital technologies can be harmful to the children in their lives. The basic argument is that from before birth, parents are sharing key information about their kids—photos, health history, legal problems—that creates a digital profile that could be used in the future by employers, universities, law enforcement, and, yes, advertisers. Often this is done without children’s permission and we are just now seeing the first generation who has "come of age" on their parents' Facebook feed start to face these issues. Learn how to balance your online presence with your desire to protect your children.
