100 Year Anniversary of the Versailles Treaty 1919-2019

This year will be 100 years since the signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty in 1919, an event which not only ended World War I, but people hoped would end global wars forever. Yet the century after Versailles saw wars much worse than ever experienced before, together with extremist regimes such as Nazism and Stalin-era Communism, the Holocaust and an upending of the world order as a host of nations broke their colonial ties with the British and French empires. Some historians say the Versailles Treaty was doomed from the start, and that the rise of Nazism were a direct result of its failure to fully address the needs to manage world peace. Others say that Nazism, the rise of world Communism and final dissolution of empires would have happened anyway. Both groups however agree that the beginnings of the modern world order as we know it today, probably began at that peace conference 100 years ago. Join us for a short talk on the various perspectives and the legacy of the Versailles Treaty.
