Sketching People

Drawing people can be rewarding on its own, and it can also bring your different settings to life when integrated within your other creations. In this class, fun light-hearted instruction sprinkled with deep focus on the inner structure of the body in relationship to gravity, light and perspective will expose you to new ideas, attitudes and skills to take your people-sketching to the next level. You will discover, hands-on, the canons of beauty established in antiquity by Greek and Roman sculptors; observe their evolution through art history; compare, apply or enhance those of contemporary live models, reaching not just resemblance, but personality and mood. You will learn how to really see and fully understand shapes, features and proportions, at-rest vs. in-movement poses (ie dance), how to draw/drape clothing around the body, etc. With time, you will be able to sketch any pose just from imagination, in a believable way. We will work form photographs as well as art modeling videos (which will make you feel like being right there in the art studio, sketching a real live model). Trying your hand at a multitude of drawing tools and media (pencil, graphite, charcoal, pastel, Conte crayons, ink, watercolor pencils - anything goes!), you will learn skills that you can apply time and again as you draw on your own.  A supply list will be emailed upon registration.
