Behind the Scenery: Gardening in Public Spaces

Gardening in public spaces is part beautiful plants, and part cultural awareness. Choosing what to plant is heavily dependent on selecting the right plant for the right site, who will see the landscape you have created and how they will react. Join us to hear the story of a horticulturist who has spent time gardening in greater Boston's public spaces that include the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Mount Auburn Cemetery and her personal garden at the Fenway Victory Gardens. You'll learn about the decisions that go into designing gardens in public spaces and the necessary considerations needed for each plant and site. With an emphasis on native and pollinator-friendly plants you'll hear about the basics of horticulture. This is a great opportunity to learn about many showy plants, flowers, and shrubs that can not only happily exist, but give back to the local ecology in our New England neighborhoods and yards. BA&CE will also schedule a walk through a public garden in the Spring to follow up on what you learn.
