Artistic and Cultural Responses to World War I

This course will examine World War I from the point of view of the social and cultural responses to the war in the world of art, music, literature, and in popular culture. The framework will follow and discuss the main political and military events, through the years 1914 through to 1918. But the focus will be on how these events were reported in the mass media, and how artists and writers responded (both in terms of high culture and wartime propaganda culture), and how the war impacted attitudes both among and towards: women, other gender-preference groups and ethnic minorities.
