On this walking tour, we’ll explore the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Boston’s spectacular contemporary park. Stretching for 1.5 miles through the heart of downtown Boston, it connects Boston’s oldest neighborhoods to its waterfront. A park for four seasons, the Greenway’s winter landscape showcases its structure and design with exceptional clarity. But, how did the underground I93 highway grow such a glorious rooftop garden? As we stroll through its series of linked parks, we’ll talk about the complicated planning that created this urban oasis. We’ll see the famous Greenway Carousel, designed from the drawings of Boston’s school children, and we’ll walk through the Armenian Heritage Park, with its peaceful labyrinth and its remarkable 12-sided sculpture, recreated differently every spring to symbolize the immigrant experience. We’ll talk about the Greenway’s many innovations, including its important and award-winning commitment to public art, and its programs for the seasonal Farmers’ and Artisan Markets. The Greenway is one of the few organic and self-sustaining parks in the country. Its famous Compost Tea, (for plants, not people!) is part of a pioneering maintenance program which creates a garden free of toxins and pollutants. Every year, over a million people visit this special space meandering through the heart of Boston. Please join us for a walk and discover this Winter Wonderland.Meet outside the Registry of Motor Vehicles, at Haymarket, 136 Blackstone Street, Boston.
