The Music of Florence Price: American Composer

Born in the late 19th century in Little Rock, Arkansas, Florence Price overcame many difficulties to carve out a a substantial musical career in the face of difficult odds.  As the daughter of a well-to-do African-American physician, Florence was able to pursue an education in music, culminating in a stint at the famed Julliard Institute.  However, after racial tensions embroiled Little Rock, Florence and her family migrated to Chicago.  Here, her career blossomed, and she began writing many classical pieces – for soloists, chamber groups and even full orchestras, collecting noteworthy accolades for her first symphony which was premiered by the Chicago Symphony.  Largely forgotten after her passing, Price’s work has been undergoing a renaissance in recent years, with several of her works emerging from the shadows.  Over three weeks, we will look at all aspects of her career, taking a listen to a variety of works for both small and large ensembles.  Come and join us while we explore the career of this remarkable composer.
