Alternative Darkroom

Photographers working with film strive for the perfect black-and-white print. Using basic paper and developer, this is possible and rewarding. But there is a whole world of darkroom 'recipes' that push the basics and the conception of what a black-and-white image should look like. This class will offer a chance to explore a few of these alternative techniques and chemistries. Every week we will work with a different paper developer and toner, producing images that are far from the straightforward print, shifting contrast, tones, lights, and darks. Some of the techniques used will be Lith, Amidol and AZO paper, Selenium, Sabatier, Sepia, and Blue Toning. We will work exclusively with fiber-based paper. If you do not provide your own, there will be a limited amount that you can purchase in the class. You may use 4x5 or 8x10 size paper. Students will work from their negatives; in 35mm and medium format. There will be a small materials fee.

Students may contact the Instructor before the first class with any questions.
