Needle felting is a popular fiber craft in which wool fleece is sculpted using special barbed needles to stab it into shape. Using a few simple techniques, you can create many different shapes that can become jewelry, ornaments, toys, wool pets, sculptures, and even dolls. You can also appliqué the fleece onto your favorite bag, hat, scarf, and other items. In this class you will learn step by step to create your very own small sculpture. This course has a materials fee.

Why did the beliefs of church leaders such as Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Cranmer, and the Council of Trent, lead to the development of different Christian Groups? How did they arrive at those beliefs? To make the question relevant to all eras including our own: How can Christians of sincere faith and good conscience arrive at different conclusions when studying the same Scriptures? You do not need to have taken previous courses in Church History nor subscribe to a particular belief system to join the conversation designed to increase our understanding of the "roots and branches" of various Christian theologies. We will examine views of the Eucharist (The Lord's Supper, Communion) as a case-study in comparative theology. Don't let the academic nature of this course description deter you from joining us. We always have lively and friendly discussions. This course was offered last offered in our Fall 2018 Term.

In this course I’m going to take you on a journey through the world of expenses and fees. We will start with the psychology of “paying for things”. Why do some people feel okay paying $30 for an ice cream at Disney, but recoil in disgust when they have to pay $4.99 for a stock trade? Why do we feel great buying CDs that have the highest fees of almost any investment, simply because we didn’t see the line item? And lastly, why does the pocket that receives the fee affect our feelings about it? Beyond investments, we’ll explore bank fees, profits, mark-ups, inflation and other things that cost us money. It’ll be fun and I promise you won’t feel too icky afterwards!

While much of the focus of the President’s House is on him and his family, many more functions are necessary to keep this national treasure habitable and magnificent. Through lots of storytelling and examples, this course will feature the people who support the living White House - the cooks and the gardeners, the Chief Usher and those who care for presidential pets, the clock winder and the chandelier cleaner, the decorators and the florists. Using your own computer, you will create a website for a small business, church group, "side hustle," or even a family reunion. You may use a Mac or a PC computer. You will create a FREE website using the program Google Sites. You will create a website of one to five pages, including a Home Page, Contact Page, Programs or Services Offered Page, and up to two additional pages (such as Photos or Testimonials). Your site will serve as a welcome mat for your business, organization, or event; it will provide a digital brochure. Your website also lets Google Search find your business if you choose to make it open to the public. If your business is a non-profit, many companies require a website to allow employees to request matching funds donations. At the end of the course, you may choose to publish your webpage or to keep it private. This course was last offered in our Spring 2023 term.

This workshop teaches a highly successful method of writing a ten-minute play. Although the workshop is designed for first-time playwrights, many people have taken it several times. In Part 1, the instructors assist the participants in selecting play topics that are likely to be successful and producible. Once the participants have selected their story and characters, the instructors encourage and guide the participants as they complete their first drafts. The third part of this workshop begins with polishing the plays for the final class which is a staged reading for Lifelong members. The playwrights cast their plays, supervise final dress readings, and experience the excitement of seeing their original work being presented. Following the staged reading, the instructors provide concrete steps for the playwright to take to submit their play for professional production and publication. Plays written in this workshop have been performed throughout the United States, received important awards, and been published in international anthologies of the Best New Plays of the Year. But most of all, we will have had fun working as a group to create original works of drama. Note: This is a nine-class course. Participants are expected to enroll in Parts 1, 2 and 3.
