What exactly happens during infancy, childhood and adolescence? How do babies understand the world and when do children learn to control themselves? Why must one-year-olds frantically touch everything and what propels teens to bond together in groups? From decoding the surprising infant roots of human prejudice and adult ethics, to targeting how love and our human passion for status evolves, this course zooms in on infancy, childhood, and adolescence. It’s perfect for anyone who is a parent or grandparent or for anyone who wonders about the person you were while you were growing up!

What if you could buy, for not much more than the price of an expensive television, technology that let you relive, in 3-D, events from your past. Would you? What if you could custom design your pet, even creating a new species, like a catdog. Or what if you could genetically engineer your child to be taller, thinner, more intelligent than you. Would you? These are questions confronting the protagonists of T. C. Boyle’s 2017 collection, The Relive Box and Other Stories. T. C. Boyle is an American novelist and short story writer whose stories frequently appear in major American magazines. They have been awarded numerous O. Henry Prizes and often been anthologized in the Best American Stories series. He is a recipient of the Rea Award for unusually significant contributions to the short story. We will read and discuss two or three stories a week from The Relive Box and Other Stories, available in multiple formats: e-book, audiobook, hardcover and paperback. For our first class we will read “The Relive Box” and “Are We Not Men?” Join us as we tackle questions that may face us in the present and near future.
