Cowlitz Tribe: Then and Now

Embark on an exploration of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, guided by the Tribe’s own spiritual leader, Tanna Engdahl. This course delves into the rich history, culture, and resilience of the Cowlitz people, whose villages once flourished along the rivers of southwest Washington, including the mighty Columbia River.

Discover the linguistic heritage of the Salish and Sahaptin-speaking populations that formed the backbone of these communities. The name "Cowlitz" itself is a testament to their enduring legacy, evolving through numerous spellings to its modern form.

Students will engage with the history of the Cowlitz Tribe, understanding their journey through persecution, resilience, and emergence as one of Washington's most vibrant and enduring tribes. Through these lectures, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the Cowlitz people's indomitable spirit and their significant place in the historical and cultural landscape of the Pacific Northwest.
