This continuing education course will introduce you to the fundamentals of note-taking for interpreters. By the end of the class, you will understand the nuts and bolts of note-taking, including page organization, use of symbols and abbreviations, and how to develop your own symbol glossary! You'll learn how to drill your symbols & abbreviations, with time to practice these techniques. This course will include lecture and performance activities, and is open to interpreters of all language pairs.
Prerequisites for this workshop: Participants must be either WA State DSHS certified or nationally certified medical interpreters (via NBCMI or CCHI). This workshop is designed for working interpreters only.
Participants will receive:
- A Gregg-ruled steno book for practice
- A personal symbol glossary to start developing your own set of symbols
- Access to audio clips for continued practice after the course
Participants must be present for the entire workshop to receive continuing education credits.
Continuing education credits are pending approval.
The following continuing education credits have been requested:
- WA DSHS - 2 general education credits
- CCHI - 1 performance based credit and 1 general education credit
- NBCMI/IMIA - 0.2 general education credits
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the benefits of note-taking and how supporting short-term memory increases accuracy in interpreting
- Explore page organization techniques
- Start a personal symbol and abbreviation glossary
- Experiment with the creation of symbols and abbreviations for NTI
- Practice techniques to drill and retain your symbols
