Addressing Life’s Big Questions: Adopting an Existential Approach in Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy provides clients with a forum for exploring many important existential issues. In both direct and indirect ways, our clients often find themselves contending with life’s “ultimate concerns”—pursuing meaning and purpose in their lives, seeking ways to overcome feelings of isolation, making difficult choices that will impact their destinies, and struggling to come to terms with their mortality.

In this workshop, participants will learn about the nature of existentialism and will gain an appreciation for how they can address key existential issues, or “ultimate concerns,” with their clients. The presenter will discuss two optimal approaches to overcoming existential isolation, seven key ways in which clients can derive a sense of meaningfulness in their lives, fourteen obstacles to living life more freely, and, finally, ten strategies for coping with anxiety about mortality. This program will also include discussion of the many ways that widely-embraced therapeutic orientations and techniques (including cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic, client-centered, and others) are well-suited for engaging in such existential work with our clients.

This program is intended for psychotherapists (regardless of their specific degree, training or orientation). The program would also be appropriate for graduate students pursuing degrees in counseling-related fields.
