Alfred Hitchcock: His Movies, His Life, and His Entertaining Depiction of the DSM-5

This workshop will identify DSM-5 mental health disorders as presented in Alfred Hitchcock’s films.

Some of films that will be discussed and analyzed: Marnie, Psycho, Vertigo, The Birds, Rebecca, Stranger on a Train, Rear Window, Wrong Man, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. We will explore the various personal issues Alfred Hitchcock displayed and how those issues manifested themselves into some of the themes in his films. The criterion in the DSM-5 will be discussed as it relates to the characters in the films. Critical analysis of each of the disorders (Anti-Social Personality Disorder, Impulse Control issues, Anxiety disorders, Paraphilic disorder (Voyeurism), Adjustment Disorder, and the Schizophrenia Spectrum) will occur and methods of intervention and treatment will be discussed to assist clinicians as they are working with their clients to help them learn new methods and coping skills in dealing with everyday life issues.

Large and small group discussions will occur as we explore the case examples of the DSM-5 criterion in Hitchcock’s films and discuss the effectiveness of Hitchcock’s coping strategies that he tried to use to relieve his anxieties.

The attendees that would be most interested in attending this program would be clinicians who work with adults and children that deal with Anti-Social Personality Disorder, Impulse Control issues, Anxiety disorders, Paraphilic disorder (Voyeurism), Adjustment Disorder, and the Schizophrenia Spectrum
